What's this "possibility of parole" crap?

"A soldier was sentenced Thursday to 90 years in prison with the possibility of parole for conspiring to rape a 14-year-old Iraqi girl and kill her and her family....Under the plea agreement, Barker got a life sentence but will not serve more than 90 years in prison, Anderson said. He will be eligible for parole in 20 years."
That plea agreement is way too lenient, he should get life imprisonment and be happy with that. At least his cooperation ensures that his fellow criminals will hang. See, that's the difference between "Us" and "The Bad Guys": When we catch someone commiting atrocities, we punish them.
