Apparently it really means "Sure, we believe in Darwinism, but only the social kind".

Maybe it's just me, but isn't it BLINDINGLY OBVIOUS that if you put poeple who don't believe that the government should be engaged in social welfare programs, in _charge_ of the government, that OF COURSE they're going to do a shitty job of it to justify their beliefs? In the words of an old Platoon Sergeant of mine: "M(%^$#)$^ing DUH!"

This is why I always respond to conservatives accusing me of supporting bloated inefficient government with something like 'I want government programs to operate as efficiently as they can, to be maximally productive in reaching whatever their goals are as measured by empirical study, and I want any necessary cuts and changes to be made, but I do not trust Republican politicians alone without any outside expertise or opposition input to make those cuts fairly, wisely and with the best interests of all American people at heart'.

If you don't mind my asking, how do anti-war or "bring the troops home now"-type protests affect troop morale in Iraq? Is there any effect? Do the troops even pay attention to that stuff?

I figure you'll have an interesting and honest take on this.
