Finally heard back from the VA. Apparently, what my contract appears to say is not what it actually said, and the "$30,000 additional" really means $30,000 total. They were kind enough to point me to the appropriate regulations stating such. Even if I had started college right after my first inlistment ended, I would only have gotten an extra $183 a month, and that only for the first year. With later years cost-of-living adjustments, I would still have only gotten $3324 extra, much less that the 5,000 bonus I _could_ have gotten, but more than the ZERO extra I'm getting right now. I so badly want to track down my recruiter and break his kneecaps, but that would be 'wrong'. >:-(

Disclaimer: I would only cripple someone if I actually thought I could get away with it, in which case I wouldn't ruin it by publicly declaring my intentions. I read the Evil Overlord's List, so I know better than to make such amateurish mistakes.

uhm

Doesn't it? The Army's like an abusive spouse; Beating current and former members is how it shows its love.

It's wrong?

Let us know when you go after him... might have a gang of us going with you.

If your recruiter said anything which they knew was actively deceptive, then I personally think you are well within the realm of 'right' to make them pay. They hurt you, so you ought to be able to hurt them back. If the system does not provide a method by which people may address their grievances, then this is the fault of the system, not the individuals, and the individuals still deserve to see justice done.

I don't remember clearly, but I figure the recruiter didn't actually _lie_ to me, so much as give me incomplete information. Just enough to cover the Army's ass legally, but not quite enough for me to make an informed choice. He may even have been operating in good faith, hard as that is to believe. IIRC, when I enlisted in 1995 the monthly payment was only $450, if it had stayed that low, I'd have made an extra $13,800. Darn those pesky cost-of-living-increases...

Come to think of it, running a couple of the current bonuses offered against the ACF amounts offered for teh same MOS's, and assuming a yearly $60 raise in G.I. Bill payments, it seems that the value of the added benefits will almost _always_ be less than the value of the cash bonus. What a coinky-dink! You'd think it was planned that way...

I do have one vague, forlorn hope. My contract was on an older form, with relevant corrections made made in pen. I'm going to make one last appeal and argue that the wording on my actual contract was still vague enough that I should get the money, regardless what the contract _should_ have said according to the regulations. I don't actually think this is going to work, but it's worth a try.

Not as sorry as that recruiter will be.... I kid, if I planned to maim him, I wouldn't actually publically threaten it first. Still a warming thought, though.

Probably a lot more than the GI bill would have given me :) They could have got off a lot cheaper if they hadn't been being pricks.
