What a horrible disappointment.

I got to see the final Star Wars movie. Didn't even have to watch a pirateed version, Lucasfilms sent us an official VHS. I am truly grateful to Lucas, for without that act of kindness, I'd have to put off savaging this movie until I got home. I'll rant at greater length later, but my main complaint is that Lucas has completely lost his ear for dialogue; Scenes that _should_ have been heartwrenching came off as contrived and ridiculous. This movie could have been spectacular, but Lucas managed to turn it into a movie that was merely "ok". And what the HELL was with the ending? This is the 21st century, heroines don't die of broken hearts anymore, could he possibly have written a more demeaning ending for Padme? The movie wasn't all bad, and I suspect I'll enjoy it greatly when I'm back in the states and able to drink and Myst it. Until then, here's a quick spoof I found:

Also, Orson Scott Card writes a real review here: http://www.hatrack.com/revengeofthesith.shtml . The irnoy is, in his latest books, Orson himself has started 'believing his own press' about his genius, to the detriment of good storytelling.

Date: 2005-06-01 09:51 pm (UTC)It's gotten to the point that I do not go to the movies unless I think the film would be better experienced in a theater. Since I'm married, it's often cheaper to buy the dvd than it is to go to the movies.

Date: 2005-06-02 11:02 am (UTC)2. As to Netflix. After 4 months in a row with over 90% of the movies we received being so scratched up that they were nearly unplayable, we decided that it just wasn't worth the money. Rental fees still make buying the movie as attractive as renting it. It's ~$4+tax to rent or $10+tax to buy. And, I can take the movies I don't like to Movie Trading Company, sell them and use the money to buy more movies.

Date: 2005-06-02 06:51 pm (UTC)he ever had one? the original (episode 4) had terrible dialogue, and Empire and Jedi were directed by others.
i don't think i've seen anything he's directed but Star Wars... is there something i can watch that might lead me to conclude that he actually can direct well, when not directing space opera?
