As all people of culture and distinction know, the only way to get a really _good_ shine on a pair of boots is to use a source of intense heat to melt the polish into the leather. Since fire can singe, and I don't want to risk sticking my new boots into the oven (The soles are wonderfully tough-yet-cushiony, but I have no idea how heat tolerant they are), a heat gun set on "medium" is the only alternative. But I can't find mine. I may have had the poor judgement to give it away. Grrr....
While I'm on the subject of boots, I must take a minute to shill for Belleville, who make the best combat boots ever. Durable yet supremely comfortable, you can actually run 2 miles in them and not worry about shin splints. The sole has enough grip that I've actually climbed trees in mine, and felt more secure than I would wearing sneakers. Plus, they gave me free shipping when I ordered replacement boots in Iraq. Go buy a pair or two today!
