Livejournal thinks nursing mothers are obscene. OK, to be perfectly fair, _they_ don't think that, they're just worried that they'll get in trouble with the idiots who do. Still, what kind of whackjob thinks breastfeeding is "obscene", "indecent", or even "icky"?

Lucky for me, this lj icon of a radio tuning knob is in no way obscene.

I live in "married housing" here at the 'tute, so there are lots of families with kids and babies, so there's a 'natural parenting and breastfeeding' support group which holds meetings in my building.

They had to take down their posters after someone complained that you could see part of a breast in one.

Oh no! Hide the kiddies! Someone's breastfeeding!

So yes, there are dumb shits who get offended over breastfeeding boobies.

Hello, we are mammals, defined by the fact that we can breastfeed. If one finds this fact offensive, one is really out of touch with reality.

No, actually they don't.

As they say quite clearly in the response quoted that you linked to.

They are, however, a business with a million+ customers, some of whom are likely to flip out over such things, and as a business, they need to cover their rear ends well. If people complaining about it are willing to foot the bill for lawsuit coverage, that might change things. Legal has nothing to do with whether or not someone could sue or otherwise cause them sufficient trouble to be Major Pain in the Butt. And if you have that many people, guaranteed at least ONE of them is indeed the sort to do just that if you push the wrong button.

(Here in Albany, it was determined that it was legal for women to walk around topless; still I doubt any business would risk putting posters in the window showing bare female breasts no matter what the justification would be)

Under what laws could they possibly sue?

That letter she got back is incredibly obnoxious. Write in campaigns don't sway the policies? Let's ramp it up a bit and start a write in campaign to Six Apart, Livejournal's parent company, demanding sensible application of the rules...

Particularly this bit "Specifically, default user picture icons are prohibited to contain overt violence, or a direct, unobstructed view of any primary or secondary sexual characteristics, regardless of the content of the icon itself." ...which isn't even the case with her icon. Fuckers.

I would say that depends on who's being breastfed. Baby? No problem. 52 year old, fat, stubbly guy wearing a latex baby bonnet with a rattle stuffed up his ass? Heading toward "icky" territory...

I will now leave you to brillo that image from your head...

Well, I _would_ invite you to DragonCon again, but this time _I'm_ too poor for such largesse.

I am entertaining mad thoughts of hopping a plane and going to Balticon (standby?). Unfortunately, I'm not only poor, I don't have a dogsitter anymore. Thus are the best-laid plans of mice and men etc. etc. Not that I've particularly noticed mice making plans...
