"The media never reports the good things in Iraq!" Does anyone in their right mind think Ahmed Al-Iraqi gives a shit that a school got painted, if he's too scared to send his kid there? When you have to worry about getting kidnapped and tortured to death with power tools, it's kind of hard to feel happy that your mangled corpse will get taken to a freshly refurbished hospital. For fuck's sake, do people even understand the concept of empathy? I don't mean sympathy, I mean the ability common to non-autistic human beings, that allows them to extrapolate the emotional reactions of others by comparing it to what their own reactions would be in a similar circumstance. Seriously, how can any intelligent person claim that, if roles were reversed, they'd be grateful?

"The troops were sent off without the proper equipment!" Well, that's annoying on two counts. For one, we were perfectly well equipped for the war that we _thought_ we were fighting, using the move-fast-hit-hard-and-don't-stick-around-for-return-fire doctrine that's been standard for decades. For that sort of fight, you don't want heavily armored humvees, because they're slower, need more fuel, and break down more often, all of which is more likely to get soldiers killed than the lack of protection would. For the first few weeks, this worked great, as witnessed by how quickly we won and how few of our guys were killed. The actual "War" part of the war was a model campaign. Which brings us to annoying part 2: If we'd had enough feet on the ground to effectively police Iraq in the aftermath, the insurgency wouldn't have been able to establish itself, and we wouldn't have needed up-armored vehicles at all. For that matter, we'd probably have been able to draw down our forces quicker. Hell, we'd _have_ to, as we couldn't sustain that sort of deployment for any great length of time.

"No one could have anticipated how things deteriorated!" Oh, bullshit. Plenty of people did, and Shrubya ignored them. For my sins, I ignored them too. What can I say, I bought into the whole "This is a heroic struggle, we'll be remembered by history as the good guys!" vibe. Oh, cruel disillusionment. :-P

"If you support the troops you can't criticize the president!"/"Support the troops, bring them home" are both equally retarded. 'Nuff said.

Also annoying is how certain (mostly Democrat) politicians who previously demanded more troops in Iraq are now opposing Shrubya's Surge. A little consistency might be nice. Personally, I think it's 3 years too late and a hundred thousand or so too few to do any good, but if we're to salvage any credibility, we have to make the effort. Not doing our utmost to fix the china we broke would be a craven abdication of responsibility. And speaking of craven abdications:

"Responsibility for the deteriorating situation in Iraq lies with the Iraqis, we done our part!" is just... stunning. Ya know, if I were an Iraqi, I would wish bloody murder on anyone who said that phrase. If we hadn't invaded, the situation that currently exists wouldn't. Period. That makes it _our_fault_ if bad things happen to people. You want credit when things go well, you gotta take the blame when they don't.

We should never have invaded. Come to think of it, we shouldn't have waged the first Gulf War either, we'd probably invade a neighboring country that was poaching our oil fields and refused to forgive a debt that they'd previously agreed to, wouldn't we? Of course, those war debts would never have existed if Iraq hadn't attacked Iran, which we sorta encouraged them to do...

That's it, I've lost all hope for humanity's future. We're doomed to an end both tragic and farcical, and we deserve every last bit of it. The intelligent squid who will some day colonize the scorched lands we leave in our wake will writhe their tentacles in befuddlement and assume they must be misinterpreting the archaeological evidence, rather than believe the truth.

Update - Another petty annoyance: "Experts" who pick up a random word in a language, think they know what it means, and then propagate that mistaken meaning. For instance, the word "Madrassa" is arabic for "School". The word has _no_ religious connotation. EVERYONE in the arab world has attended a "Madrassa", as have most people in south asia, or anywhere where that word entered the local language. For that matter, since Israel is officially a bilingual country, all the wee tykes there attend "madrassas" too. God, Faux News 'analysts' are a bunch of morons.

Oh, wait, that's a 14 year old headline, never mind... Doncha just _love_ how ever since 9/11, the right-wing dogma has been "It's all Clinton's fault for withdrawing troops from Somalia!", when it was largely _republican_ congress-critters and media shills who demanded that withdrawal*? What's that, you say? Bin Ladin himself claims he was emboldened by it? Yeah, well he said the SAME DAMN THING about Reagan's withdrawal from Beirut. He said he was "Glad" that Democrats took control of congress? 2 years ago, he said the same thing about Republicans keeping control, AND about Shrubya being reelected. He's a fucking TERRORIST, he'll say whatever he thinks will dishearten his enemies the most. What kind of _moron_ would you have to be to take him at his word? Freaking "Bob" in Dobbstown, people. Grr.... >:-P

*Yeah, I know they had plenty of Democrat company there, or they wouldn't have been able to force the issue. Still, what kind of putz complains "You shouldn't have done what I told you to do!"?

I can't find my heat gun. As all people of culture and distinction know, the only way to get a really _good_ shine on a pair of boots is to use a source of intense heat to melt the polish into the leather. Since fire can singe, and I don't want to risk sticking my new boots into the oven (The soles are wonderfully tough-yet-cushiony, but I have no idea how heat tolerant they are), a heat gun set on "medium" is the only alternative. But I can't find mine. I may have had the poor judgement to give it away. Grrr....

While I'm on the subject of boots, I must take a minute to shill for Belleville, who make the best combat boots ever. Durable yet supremely comfortable, you can actually run 2 miles in them and not worry about shin splints. The sole has enough grip that I've actually climbed trees in mine, and felt more secure than I would wearing sneakers. Plus, they gave me free shipping when I ordered replacement boots in Iraq. Go buy a pair or two today!

How many people can honestly say that they've had a whole classroom full of soldiers, IN UNIFORM, pounding their desks and demanding to see his nipples? I might be the only one in the whole world who can make that claim.

See, I was attending PLDC way back in the Dark Ages of 2002. The instructor had stepped out for a few minutes, leaving us with the directive to discuss the subject of "professionalism" in his absence. Naturally, the conversation turned to body art. Understand, _I_ didn't bring this up; one of the other male students (all of whom had seen my tattoos in the showers) told one of the females that she should ask to see my nipple tats. I demurred, not out of modesty, but because the teacher could have come back at any moment. However, my fellow students would not be deterred. A few of them started pounding their desks and chanting "Show us your tits!" and soon everyone else joined in. I had no choice but to give in to peer pressure, but at least I was rewarded with applause and wolf-whistles.

I fianally got around to getting the disposable camera pictures from my first Iraqi vacation developed. I was disappointed to find that most of the pictures were too washed out to see anything other than indistinct blurs. Out of a whole camera, only 6 pictures were worth keeping. Luckily for me, the ones I planned to use for blackmail purposes were among the survivors. >:-)

Saddam Hussein was taken to the gallows and executed Saturday, Iraqi state-run television reported. If there is an afterlife, may his be as miserable as he deserves. Maybe he'll get the spot in Hell next to Pinochet, so they can compare Brimstone burns... :-)

"Saddam Hussein will be executed no later than Saturday, said an Iraqi judge authorized to attend his hanging." However, I can't seem to find a live, to-the-second countdown page. The Internet has failed us all.

OK, I've been a Real Human Being for what, 7 months now? Yet I still mentally refer to myself as a grunt. Weird. Anyway:

After all this time, I think I've discovered the most pointlessly tragic thing about Dubya's Reign of Error, and that is this: Real Army Soldiers can't make fun of the Nasty Guard any more. Time was, someone on active duty could look at them and sneer at their paltry "One weekend a month, 2 weeks a year!" foolishness, secure in their own superior studliness and bad-assery. But now, chances are any given Reservist/Guard-person has been deployed as often as their full-time counterpart, and that's just _wrong_. At least we can still mock the Chair Force, but in the not-too-distant future, they'll all be combat veterans too! Where's the justice in that, I ask you? Bah...

"A soldier was sentenced Thursday to 90 years in prison with the possibility of parole for conspiring to rape a 14-year-old Iraqi girl and kill her and her family....Under the plea agreement, Barker got a life sentence but will not serve more than 90 years in prison, Anderson said. He will be eligible for parole in 20 years."

That plea agreement is way too lenient, he should get life imprisonment and be happy with that. At least his cooperation ensures that his fellow criminals will hang. See, that's the difference between "Us" and "The Bad Guys": When we catch someone commiting atrocities, we punish them.

The Anti-Suicide-Pact. The participants, be they post-traumatic vets, emo angst-boys, or persons implicated in yet another gay republican sex scandal, make an oath: No participant is allowed to kill him/her/itself, unless all the others are already dead. Neither is any participant allowed to just stand there if one of the other attempts to kill him/her/it, they have to make at least a token attempt to put up a fight. This way, none of them off themselves, unless they hate life so much they're willing to kill an arbitrary number of their friends first. Why, it's so brilliant, it might just become a pervasive internet meme...

In other news, Jewish, Muslim, and Christian fanatics find a cause they can all agree on, Oceania never suggested invading Eastasia, We _always_ meant for Iraq to fall into chaos, Flu vaccinations are a sinister partisan ploy, Republican plan to help Democratic candidates is tragically misunderstood, and the dolphins are preparing to strike. I'd be interested in seeing how well developed the dolphin's vestigial rear limbs actually are, as most of the muscles that would have attached to them in eons past have now been co-opted to power the tail instead.

Buddy Christ in Iraq. Iraqi troops backed by American military advisers arrested a suspected Shiite militiaman believed to have carried out kidnappings and killings. A gunbattle broke out at the suspect's house in Baghdad's Shiite stronghold of Sadr City, leaving a woman and a young girl dead, Iraqi police said.

Afterward, angry men at the scene held up a color photo of a smiling, winking Jesus giving a "thumbs up" sign that they said was left by troops at the raided house — an allegation denied by U.S. and Iraqi officials.

The photo, known as the "Buddy Christ," is from the movie "Dogma," a 1999 religious satire in which "Buddy Christ" is part of a church campaign to improve Jesus' image.

U.S. military spokesman Lt. Col. Barry Johnson said the photo was a "rather ridiculous attempt" to discredit the raid. It was unclear how it ended up at the site.

Oh, Bullshit. You KNOW they did it. While I must condemn such irresponsible behavior, I must also salute their audacity. Here's hoping their Article 15 punishment isn't too severe.

"Most Iraqis Favor Immediate U.S. Pullout, Polls Show

BAGHDAD, Sept. 26 -- A strong majority of Iraqis want U.S.-led military forces to immediately withdraw from the country, saying their swift departure would make Iraq more secure and decrease sectarian violence, according to new polls by the State Department and independent researchers."

So, that means we have to leave, right? I mean, if it's a War of Liberation, and the people you Liberated tell you to leave, you're sorta obliged...

"Four charged in graffiti spree.

South Congress Avenue businessman Brandon Hodge doesn't care if he never sees the names Gimix, Scope, Radar or Zenac again... Hodge wondered who the graffiti artists were, so the president of the 60-member South Austin Merchants Association, acting on a hunch, logged onto myspace.com and poked around to see if any of them had a personal Web page on the popular hosting site."

And they did. Complete with incriminating photos. I hope they get extra punishment for sheer retardedness...

"Tattoo in prison makes molester a marked man.

CARLISLE, Ind. -- An inmate serving life in prison for molesting and killing 10-year-old Katie Collman is now the subject of an investigation into how he ended up with the tattoo "Katie's Revenge" emblazoned across his forehead."

As prison tattoos go, it was a pretty good one too. Nice, clean lines, looks like it won't fade or blur. My complements to the artist. (Evil grin)

In current events, Kip Hawley Is An Idiot. Going back to the news of a month ago, the liquid bomb plot was completely unfeasible. _I_ already knew that, having read the Poor Man's James Bond cover to cover. Further back in history, Why did Thomas Jefferson Hate America?

More important than all this foolishness, behold the glory of the Lego Hall of Justice. I wish I could take credit for it. But when I build my Lego Tachikoma, my place in Geek Lore shall be assured!

Here because I don’t want to start a flame war in [livejournal.com profile] soldiergrrrl's blog if I can help it.

By the definitions you posted, one could claim that Stalin and Mao were “Communo-Fascists”. Or that Louis XIV ("L'État, c'est moi") was a “Solar-Monarchal-Fascist”. Both claims would be idiotic, but they would be consistent with your definition of the term. The jihadis' semi-coherent mishmash of a political philosophy owes much more to marxism than it does to anything Mussolini or Hitler had a hand in. The term “Islamo-fascist” is used by half-educated laymen who think they know more than they actually do, because it just sounds scary and/or cool. Kinda like references to “The Mad Cow Virus”, or “Irreducible Complexity”. Better terms include Islamic Fundamentalists, Islamic Militants, Islamists, Jihadis, or just plain Homicidal Whackjobs. All are accurate, and save for the last one, don’t involve fuzzy-minded scare labels. The actual reality is scary enough.

As for LGF: I don’t like going to any site where it’s considered acceptable behavior for commenters to openly advocate the genocide of Ragheads, Fags, or Godless Liberals. I’m funny that way.

And yes, I am moving back to Madison. I was a bloody minded reactionary when I lived there before. Four years living in Hinesville turned me into the flaming liberal I am today.

Courtesy of Warren Ellis(Warning: This article is on a porn site. There _shouldn‘t_ be any nekkid pictures, but I can‘t guarantee it):
Kurd Couple Killed For Six-Minute Sex Video

In Arbil, southern Kurdistan’s capital, a couple were killed after their pornographic video CD was distributed in the city’s market, according to news published in the Kurdish weekly Hawlati on Thursday. The couple were killed within one week. The woman’s body was found on Tuesday. The video is only 6 minutes and 10 seconds and it is taken on a mobile telephone, Hawlati stated. The event has been the topic of discussion all over Arbil and the religious community in the mosques issued decrees for clamping down on the couple, Hawlati added.”

There, but for the Grace of the ACLU, go we.

Another story about Iraqi porn, this time of the gay insurgent variety:
“Sordid Images on TV Repel the Kurds, but They Raise Some Skepticism, Too
ERBIL, Iraq, July 15 - Each night at 10 p.m. this week, Kurds in this northern city have gathered in front of their televisions to watch the videotaped confessions of a man known simply as Sheik Zana.
(snip)
But Sheik Zana's confessions, delivered in Kurdish, stand out because he and his followers had a habit of videotaping not only what appear to be horrific murders and rapes, but also sex among themselves and with the young men whom they were trying to recruit for their cause.”

I’m skeptical too, but not completely. While it’s very common for the Kurdish and Iraqi authorities to beat fraudulent confessions out of people, it’s _also_ very common for men to “make do” if they don’t have any local prostitutes to slake their urges on, even if they aren’t gay. In fact, at FOB Paliwoda, we fired one of our interpreters because the he was caught “selling his affections” to some (male) soldiers. Even though I don’t think the Army should kick out gays, it still seems wrong that he lost his job, and his customers didn’t get formally punished at all. I bet they did a loooooot of pushups, though.

While it wouldn’t surprise me if the latest terror scare was a sham, I don’t really expect that it is. I’m _sure_ that any actual threat will be milked for all it’s worth, but I think it’s more likely than not that the threat was legitimate. With that in mind, WHAT MORON DECIDED IT WAS A GOOD IDEA TO DUMP SUSPECT LIQUIDS INTO GIANT CONTAINERS?!?! Sweet “Bob” in Dobbstown, are people really that stupid?

Apparently. Per Pharyngula, Intelligent Design doesn‘t apply to churches. “The congregation and volunteers designed and built the new church apparently without filing plans or gaining approval from local or state entities. Carroll, himself a homebuilder, said he was not aware of any requirements and remains unconvinced a government body should have a say in how a church is built. "If the state and the church are separate, I don't understand why they think they've got jurisdiction," he said.” Darwin went hungry, that day.

I really like Ken Macleod's books. They're well written, intelligent, reasonably hard science fiction, and they're just plain trippy too. But reading his personal thoughts, written lovingly in his journal for the whole world to admire... The man's a total Commie. I'll still read his books, but it saddens me that I can't honestly recommend his blog to anyone. Hence the lack of linkage.

The world is not totally stupid though. There are plenty of cool statues. And if all else fails, there’s rainbows.

"U.S. troops accused of killing Iraq family". With a little rape and arson on the side. Ordinarily, I'd still be withholding judgment until more information was available, but in this case, one of them has already confessed.

Oh, it gets worse. Apparently, he did so out of guilt after 2 of his platoon-mates got kidnapped and killed, the implication being that he felt responsible. Gee, ya think? Fucking morons. As if we didn't have enough problems over there, now we have criminal thugs going out of their way to give the locals legitimate reasons to want revenge.
chaotic_nipple: (Default)
Hey, remember back when our official policy was that all of the Iraqi insurgents were terrorists, and we swore we'd never negotiate or compromise with them? Looks like the current Iraqi government would beg to differ. So, that means that they suddenly became terrorists too, right? Man, this political stuff is so confusing... On a serious note, maybe if we'd been willing to talk to the insurgents, say, 3 F*)$ING YEARS AGO, some of the pointless bloodshed since then might have been avoided. And we wouldn't look like idiots for "caving in to fanatics" after swearing up and down that we wouldn't.
chaotic_nipple: (Default)
"US soldiers' bodies found in Iraq". By this point, there wasn't any realistic chance that the jihadis _wouldn't_ have tortured them to death, but at least we can hope that the lack of a video tape means that they died in heroic fashion, taking a few bad guys down with them and spitting in the eyes of their killers.

This is the point where we should all pause to reflect that, even at their worst, the abuses at Abu Ghraib positively pale in comparison to the STANDARD PRACTICES of the other side. Morally corrupt and intellectually retarded as the Bush administration may be, we're _still_ the good guys.
chaotic_nipple: (Default)
"BAGHDAD, Iraq - Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said Wednesday he believed Iraqi forces were capable of taking over security around the country within 18 months, but he did not mention a timetable for U.S.-led coalition forces to leave." Somehow, I don't think holding my breath would be a good idea.

Ya know, plenty of right wing types like to whine "The liberal media is biased! Things aren't that bad in Iraq!" To an extremely limited extent, they're right. But compared to the absolute fantasy world that Faux News reports on, CNN was a very paragon of truth and accuracy.
